This symbol is pronounced ‘Ek Onkar’. It represents the “One almighty reality” or “One God”. ‘Ek Onkar’ in this form was first introduced by the founding Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. When the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, compiled the Adi Granth – holy scripture of the sikhs -, with Bhai Gurdas Ji as their scribe, ‘Ek Onkar’ was placed as its first expression.
This fundamental teaching of Sikhism is that there is only “One Essence” or “One Reality” that sustains all.
